An alternative would be to bake your baking soda and use that. Heat drives off water (and carbon dioxide) from baking soda, turning it into sodium carbonate (aka washing soda or soda ash). Sodium carbonate is a more potent base than baking soda, but not as caustic as lye. McGee goes into detail: https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/15/dining/15curious.html
