Bette, the 1/2 cup of milk is added to the yolks along with the flour and cornstarch. Some of the hot milk and sugar is added to the egg yolks and milk mixture to temper. Once this mixture is tempered (warmed slowly by having hot liquid added to them), you pour this back into the pot with the rest of the ingredients to cook and thicken. In short, the milk and dry mixture are mixed in with the egg yolks, so it gets added at the same time that the tempered eggs are added. We hope that makes sense! Kye@KAF
