Sorry for any confusion, Kashmira. The 1/2 cup of milk is added to the cornstarch, flour, and egg yolks while the rest of the milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla bean (if using) are heating up. You whisk the milk-egg mixture until smooth and then add the hot milk to the eggs to temper. Check out this process described under "Time to heat things up," for more details.
