Serban, tangzhong was popularized in the '90s, but the technique existed before then. No doubt there are regional variations that have popped up in other places as well! The history of baking is one of many overlapping techniques and discoveries coming into existence all over the world. It's one of the things that makes the world of baking such a rich one.
