My daughter is anaphylactic to casein, and we have always used Smart Balance vegan margarine. We like the flaxseed one with the green lid. She's very, very sensitive (she was once hospitalized from one bite of a Pop Tart with undeclared milk) and has no issues whatsoever with the Smart Balance.

However, for baking, I prefer to use vegetable shortening versus the vegan margarine because it will separate and doesn't hold up to room temperature well.
