I discovered that a starter kept in the back of the refrigerator for YEARS without feeding can be successfully revived. At the beginning of the pandemic I decided to see if I could revive it. It had dark hooch on top and thick starter below. After days of feeding it came back and I successfully made wonderful loaves with it every three days for 2 1/2 years. It is now resting in the back of the refrigerator again until I decide to revive it and begin baking sourdough again.
