There is a dry looking crust with small areas of white, that look like flour sprinkled on top of my sourdough starter but I do not see any pink or peach color and it still just smells yeasty. This is my first try making a starter. It is 8-9 days old and I fed it once every day, except for the last 4 days when it was fed every other day (not intentional).
I use: 35g. old starter, 50g. combination of rye, whole wheat and AP flour, 50g. water and it is kept around 75 degrees in a loose covered jar.
There is dried starter around the rim and a little up the sides of the jar some of which might have fallen in when I put the lid on. It used to rise very high but lately not so much and is thicker. Is this starter spoiled or does it just need more TLC?
