Hi Rosemarie, I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your question! Most sourdough starter recipes don't begin with yeast, let alone 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast! Such a mixture would definitely cause a quart-sized jar to overflow when left at room temperature, so I don't think you did anything wrong. You might want to consider trying our sourdough starter recipe, as an alternative, since this recipe doesn't sound correct to me.
