Hi! Since I've been running low on flour due to the pandemic, I started to neglect my starter a bit. It's a 100% hydration KAF white whole wheat starter (originally it was from the mature KAF starter which I purchased). It used to be AP flour until I ran out. Anyway, I've left it on the counter (~70°) and only fed it once every 2 or 3 days for a week or two. It seemed fine until I noticed the dried starter on the inside wall of my glass container looked dark, almost greenish. It appeared dry and not fuzzy though. I transferred a little bit to a new container and just fed as usual, but now I'm worried. I hadn't looked too closely at it, what if it had a pink or orange bit and I didn't notice? Would it be common for that to develop in just a couple days? If so, just how dangerous is it?
If it starts behaving normally in the new container, does that mean it's fine, or could it still be dangerous? This is assuming the icky dry greenish bit on the walls wasn't dangerous itself (or was it...?). Anyway, I guess I'm wondering if it appears to "revive," would it mean it's still safe, or could it revive but still be... Toxic. Thanks in advance, I love KAF!!
