Hi Sarah, when a starter has been refrigerated for that long it definitely could use some feedings at room temperature to bring it back to full vitality before using. If it smelled very unpleasant to you I wouldn't recommend using it in your baking until the aroma improves. While I don't know whether or not it would make you sick, it's unlikely to contribute good flavor and rise until it's healthier and better nourished. I'd give it a few days of twice a day feedings at room temperature until it's rising well and smells more palatable before you return to making waffles.
