Hi Janice, the mature starter you purchased is quite resistant to unfriendly invaders and really doesn't require that the container be cleaned each time you feed it. I just scrape down the sides of the container after I do a feeding to keep it neat and prevent any crusty buildup. Every once in a while, when I'm feeling inspired, I'll wash out the container with very hot water to get a fresh start. Barb
