Hi Linda, as long as you're not seeing any mold or pink or orange coloring, it's worth a shot! It sounds like what you have there is basically a dehydrated starter, so you could try reviving it according to the recommended method suggested in this blog post. Since your starter is still so hard, soaking it a bit longer (perhaps with some added flour and water) might be warranted. I would look for some bubbling within another 24 hours or so as a positive sign that you are heading in the right direction.
