Hi Maggy, from the sounds of it, your starter is perfectly fine and I wouldn't worry another minute about it. As long as your starter is doubling nicely, has a pleasant aroma, and shows no current signs of mold or pink/orange discoloration, then there is no need to worry about what may or may not have occurred in the past. Furthermore, from your description of how you handled your starter in the past, I think it's highly unlikely that your starter was ever compromised.
