My starter was neglected for a few days on the counter. I had someone else feed it for me and she said there was a skin on top that was warmer in color than the rest of the starter. She skimmed it off and fed it as usual. Now I’m paranoid it might’ve been pink, as in from the bad bacteria. My starter is several years old. Usually lives in the fridge and fed once a week until I want to bake. I took it out to start invigorating it and feeding it for thanksgiving recipes. Now I am paranoid it’s got the pink mold and I don’t know bc it’s all mixed in. So my question is if there is mold will it reaccumulate so I know for sure? Would the smell be off if this is the case? I certainly don’t want to get my family sick and can acquire a new starter from someone I have given discard to to start their own, but I’d like to save it if I can. So how would I know if there was mold before it was fed yesterday? Thank you!!
