Hi LT, the type of "brainy" surface you describe could be a yeast adaptation to a deprived environment. Does it look like this? In any case it sounds like a few days of twice a day feedings at room temperature should bring your starter back to its normal appearance, aroma and rising behavior. Look for all these factors as good signs that your starter has been revived successfully.
