Hi Amelia, it's fine to switch to 113g each whenever you want, although 50g each should work fine too, as long as you have a suitable container that fits that amount. Ideally you don't want the starter spread out too thinly in a wide bowl or container (look for about an inch of depth right after feeding), and it helps if the container is clear and taller than it is wide, with straight sides, when the starter begins to rise. This makes it easier to see they type of doubling behavior we describe. For 50g each I think a pint-sized canning jar should work well. For 113g each we recommend a quart-sized container.
I wouldn't worry too much about the aroma of your starter at this point, as it's not uncommon for it to go through some funky odors early in the creation process. By the time your starter is doubling predictably, it should smell a lot better! Look for a "pleasant" aroma by the end of the process.
