I've recently been trying to start a new starter (my last healthy starter was thrown out by someone who thought they were helping clean out the fridge), I had fantastic activity at first, but now I've got a thin, almost dry film forming on top trapping bubbles if I saw it on my homebrew I might toss it depending on the brew. the smell is not great but it is still a very young starter.
