Hi Charlotte, I'm glad to hear your husband is doing well, and I hope your recovery is also going well. I'm not so sure your sourdough starter will be able to recover, but if you don't see any signs of mold, or pink or orange streaks/coloring, then it's certainly worth a shot! I would recommend pouring off any brown liquid, and feeding some of the healthier looking starter from below. It will likely smell pretty funky, but it still may be worth giving it 3-4 days of twice a day feedings at room temperature to see if it begins doubling in size and returns to its normal aroma. If you don't see any promising activity in that amount of time, then it may be time to start over, or purchase a starter from us.
In future, if you're not able to feed your starter regularly, the refrigerator will keep a mature starter safe for quite a long time (months), although you'll probably still have to give it a few days of revival feedings to get it nice and active again on the other side.
