Hi Sue, I'm sorry I wasn't able to respond to your question in a more timely fashion! I was away for a few weeks. Without knowing what your starter is composed of, it's difficult for me to say what the odor you are experiencing might be, but I wouldn't recommend using your starter until it clears up. Many ills can be remedied by a few days of diligent feeding at room temperature, and this certainly shouldn't hurt anything. Depending on your usual feeding routine, you may want to feed once or twice a day, but take care to replenish (feed) your starter when it's at its high point of rising, or just beginning to fall rather than allowing it to fall significantly between feedings. I suspect a few days of this treatment will help clear up the bad odor, but if it doesn't it may be time to begin with a new starter. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
