I have been trying to get a sourdough starter ready for baking since 7/28. It is active and I am feeding it every 24 hours. I failed to feed my starter in a 24 hour. And when I went back to it at 39 hours I noticed there was black mold sitting on top. I went to scrape the entire starter out to discard it and I noticed that just the top layer had the mold on it so I scooped it off and continued to feed the starter on its regular schedule. That was on day 13. Since then I have not seen any sign of mold in my starter that I leave out on the counter. I am religious about feeding it every 24 hours since that incident. No sign of mold. Is it still safe to use?
