Hi, I have been keeping my starter in the same container and feeding it whole wheat flour for a few weeks now and i just started noticing black dots on the inner walls of the container where streaks of starter reside, and a somewhat nasty smell was developing, however the smell wasn't that strong and did not overpower the smell of the starter. To be safe, I transferred my starter to a bowl and cleaned the container before pouring my starter back in. Are the black spots a sign of an invading organism that may endanger my starter?
