Hello Barb, and thank you so much for your thoughtful and knowledgeable comments. I started my sourdough starter on Saturday morning (May 2) and had terrific bubbly activity on Day 2 which I understand is likely the activity of the bacteria that gives off carbon dioxide (based on your article and comments). By the end of Day 2 when the started had subsided somewhat, a band of gold -colored liquid had formed in the middle. I have heard of the possibility of liquid rising to the top; but this was a band of liquid (gold colored) in the middle. I chose to just stir it in and feed it according to my planned schedule (50g whole wheat, 50 g all purpose and 115 gram water) today (Day 3) but want to make sure that this gold-colored liquid doesn't indicate something foul or amiss with my starter. Thanks!
