Hi Sarah, it can be harder to get the correct consistency when feeding by cups, but you certainly haven't done any permanent harm to your starter, so I hope you felt safe to continue. With our starter recipe the consistency you're looking for right after feeding is a thick, but easily stirrable paste. If your starter seems a lot thicker than that, then it's fine to add a bit more water. I hope by now your starter is bubbling and rising nicely, but if you're still having issues, please let us know.
