Hi Kylee, it's not uncommon for starters to smell a little funky at some point in the creation process, and you may also experience a lull in activity for a few days, with little or no rise and only bubbles on top. These occurrences are not necessarily a sign that you need to start over, but if you're not seeing any bubbles at all after a few feedings, then you might want to consider a fresh start. As far as temperature goes, anything in the 70-78 degree range should work, so find a spot that is convenient for you and stick to that temperature. If you need further help troubleshooting your sourdough starter, please feel free to call our Baker's Hotline at 855-371-2253. We'd love to talk sourdough with you! Barb
