Hi Kimberly, while we often say to discard a starter that has shown any signs of mold, I've also read that it's okay to remove the mold and feed a small portion of the remaining starter, which it sounds like you've done. I don't know of any test that will prove a starter has rid itself of all mold, but feeding it twice daily at room temperature for a few days should flush out any unwelcome visitors. My gut says your starter is probably perfectly fine and may just need to get back to its normal routine in order to return to its normal aroma. As long as its bubbling nicely, shows no signs of mold, and doesn't smell extremely off, I would assume it's good and will be smelling like its old self again soon.
