Hi Jenna, I wouldn't worry, unless the skin is fuzzy or has a pink or orange tinge. It sounds like you may need to cover your starter a little more carefully to help prevent the starter from drying out on top and developing this skin. The reason we recommend that you cover your starter loosely is that fermentation gases can build up and cause the lid to pop off. The starter itself doesn't need oxygen to ferment. It's fine to cover your starter container tightly with plastic wrap or a lid, and just vent the gases occasionally.
