Robin, a shower cap is simply an easy way to cover your rising loaf. Since its elastic holds it to the rim, it's able to form a nice "attic" over the rising loaf, giving it room to rise without hitting any interference; unlike plastic wrap, which can cling to the loaf as it rises.
