I don't have four cake pans. Can I bake 2 layers & hold the batter until I can get the pans cooled & cleaned & then bake the last 2 layers? Should I put phatic wrap down on the surface of the waiting batter? Should the waiting batter be on counter top or in the 'fridge?

Or should I just bake two "thick" layers & try to slice them with my bread knife?
