You might want to try using something that's a bit stiffer than wax paper if you've had trouble in the past. Try cutting up strips of box board (like a cereal box, etc.) and using those to protect the serving plate. When you're ready to remove them, press downwards and slide out in one swift motion. If that still doesn't give you a clean edge, consider using an offset spatula or a dough scraper to press against the side of the cake and then pull the strips out from underneath.
