Hi Renee,
I'm so glad to hear this recipe is so close to your favorite from Mary!  I've pondered over the crunchy crust, and I'm thinking that if you sprinkled the cake with plain white table sugar after it has turned out of the pan, that might work. The cake will somewhat moist and sticky on the outside, so the sugar would stick without any additional glaze and it would also melt a little bit, so it wouldn't be pure crunch or too sandy.
