I made apple pie early in my marriage with a Dutch crumb topping and 55 years later it is the family’s very favorite. I have to admit that I’ve never made an apple pie with a top crust. No gap, ever. I use butter, shortening, whatever. But lately I’ve been using lard (gasp!) like my Granny Hunn did. She was the best baker Ever! I think lard is not so bad for you. No trans fats like shortening.
