Thanks for replying so promptly. I did use cups---stirred the flour before scooping, used straight edge across top of cup to level the surface. I've always used volume measures with no problem, but in this case, I was working from an older printout of the recipe that doesn't have weights, so I had no idea there was a version with weights.
Given that the recipe was originally without weights, it must have worked with measuring by volume. (I have a scale, but really don't like weighing ingredients so I rarely use it, and it has never mattered.)
I have to suspect this is not the answer. Sorry to sound stubborn, but really, it's an old recipe that only recently was adapted to weight measures, and yet it worked.
