Susan, it depends on how long you wait between the feeding and when you use it. If you feed it right before bed and then use it the next morning, it's likely your starter will still be ripe and ready to use. However, if it sits for 12-16 hours (or more), it will probably need to be fed again. You can also feed it the day you'd like to use it, and just watch it closely until it's ready to use.
