Hi Nadine, I haven't generally found this necessary, but I do sometimes spray the surface of my loaf with water before baking in a Dutch oven. Feel free to experiment though! This blog post suggests adding a little water or a few ice cubes to the preheated baking vessel, but I would be reluctant to use this method if you're working with a ceramic Dutch oven.
