Hi Sue, if the lid doesn't fit tightly then you won't be able to capture quite as much steam. Less steam means you'll see less of the crisping effect that usually happens when the bread is baked inside a crock. If the lid mostly fits, then you're welcome to give it a shot and see if you like the results. It will certainly turn out more impressive than a loaf that's just baked on a baking sheet. Kye@KAF
