Hi Anne, we're so sorry to hear that the grease/sugar method resulted in failure, especially when it was intended for your husband's birthday celebration! As PJ notes, the timing of removal matters a lot when it comes to sugar, so it's going to work best to remove the cake in the 5-10 minute window she mentions. Of course, we wouldn't blame you if you never want to try that method again! If, despite your best efforts, your cake still sticks, this blog provides some alternative methods for removal.
