The melted shortening is easier to apply, but can sometimes run and bead-up on nonstick coatings. Smear it on with your fingers while it’s still solid. Don’t rush. Get every cranny coated. Crisco gives great results. A cast aluminum pan gives a sturdy crust that holds together.
