What a disappointment indeed, Wiley! There are a number of reasons your cake might fall flat in the oven, including using too much leavener (any chance you happened to use baking soda rather baking powder?), opening the oven or jostling the cake early on during the bake. Over or under-beating can also sometimes cause a cake to fall.
