Hi Debra. The usual method is using Gel Food Coloring and a clear liquor like vodka. If you have a small whisk available this is the easiest utensil to mix the two ingredients together. A fork or small silicone spatula should also help to homogenize the mixture, it just might take some extra effort.  Happy Baking!
