I love this, thanks for reminding me of my dear Grandma! She's gone now, but would be 109 if living, and she always had a huge container with flour and shortening mixed and ready to go. Maybe it's a think homemakers in the '30s were taught. Your article made me remember her arthritic hands blending together the flour and shortening until the mixture was crumbly. I do use her method to make crust, but now I think I should make some "pie crumbs" to be ready ahead for Thanksgiving.
