Vera, give it a try — I think it should work just fine. You want the shortening blended in entirely, and the butter blended just enough that it's in pea-sized pieces, or pieces that are flattened and about the size of a dime. Either/both is the size you're after; so when you see that your mixer has produced these results, stop mixing and drizzle in the water, mixing just enough to distribute it thoroughly.
