Many years ago when Nancy Silverton's book came out, i jumped into baking with both feet. Breathlessly followed her instructions to the letter, and my baby sourdough starter was born. I brought it with me to work so as not to miss feedings; my boss was kindly indulgent, and my roommate at the time declared "if i come to the kitchen early one morning and this thing has a heartbeat, i'm moving out!" so nice to know that someone else traveled with their starter!
