We grew up living in the Santa Rosa, Ca. area and my Mother always used Gravenstein Apples for her pies. They were delicious with their distinctive taste and texture. We add cinnamon, some cloves mixed with the sugar for seasoning.
Today, I am only able to get these apples in September in only a few stores ( but they hve always come through with them in small amounts)
This pie is our herald of Autumn, at the beginning of the school year and again at Thanksgiving. I have always prepared enough to be frozen for Thanksgiving.
