I planted my own apple trees in 1976 and enjoyed them for nearly 20 years, until we moved. I chose Golden Delicious and Jonathan spur-type trees from Stark's nursery. We had fruit in the second year with these smaller manageable trees, which gave us between two and five bushels of apples every year. I used both apples in pies, sauces, cakes, cookies and delicious apple salads and dumplings. My Mom and I canned sliced apples and applesauce. I also dried some for snacks.
At age 75, I am too old now to maintain fruit trees, but still hunt for my favorites in stores and orchard stands each year. I no longer bake bread each week, but still cook for myself and my husband.
