My mother always said gravenstines were the best pie apples, and her pies were always great. They are a summer apple and were very hard to find 60+ years ago and nearly impossible now. I like a combination of apples, never just one, but I can't always find a good selection. I've never seen any Russett in the grocery store and we are not near any orchards.
