Hi Peggy. Thanks for sharing the results! Rhubarb certainly can vary in moisture content from batch to batch, so if your compote was a bit too loose for the cake, next time you can try letting it roast for just a bit longer to help evaporate any excess liquids.  Reducing the sugar to taste is great...finding the just right sweet-tart ratio can really make a cake shine.
