Hi Susan! Clear jars, like mason jars, are excellent because they do help us see our starter's progress, which you sadly don't get with the crock. Though the crock is a nice home for it, because it's easy to clean and allows the starter to grow without fear of too much pressure building with a tight fitting lid. And really, your starter's home is a very subjective choice. We've even seen people use plain Tupperware. Whatever works best for you, is the best option. If you wanted to try out a glass jar, and find it's a better fit, there's lots of other uses for the crock. We store utensils in ours, as well as candy for a little baking boost as we bake. There's really no wrong way to use it, so get creative and have fun! And of course: happy baking.
