Not a silly question at all, Sophie! Your starter is likely fine. I like to scrape the sides of my jar down periodically with a rubber spatula to keep them mostly clear, and then every once in a while I'll transfer it into another container so I can give the jar a proper scrubbing. But flour on the sides isn't harmful most of the time, it's just a little scruffy looking. Happy baking!
