Linda, different types of flour weigh different amounts per cup, and different types of flour can also perform quite differently in a recipe. On such a small scale (1 cup of flour) your method probably works just fine, but if you're planning to increase a recipe significantly I would not recommend measuring this way. It's important to take into account the different properties of each flour when making substitutions.
