April,
For non-organic flours, glyphosate is federally approved for use by farmers. Any application must comply with its regulatory approval, and, if used, residual glyphosate levels in wheat should remain well below the federally mandated level for wheat of 30 parts per million.
While we don’t currently have a testing program in place to determine if glyphosate is present in flour, our team is always taking steps to improve our products and best meet the needs of our customers. A very recent example of this is the introduction of our White Whole Wheat Flour (the subject of this article) as King Arthur Flour’s first identity preserved product. In addition to other requirements of this program, our farmers are not permitted to use glyphosate as a pre-harvest application on the white winter wheat from which it’s milled. We’re proud of this step taken within our supply chain.
In a similar vein, synthetic chemicals, including glyphosate, are prohibited from use on the wheat that’s milled to make certified organic flours. King Arthur Flour offers a full line of 100% organic flours to ensure that our customers have options to suit their individual needs. Our organic flour line is also 100% US grown and milled wheat, independently verified by QAI (Quality Assurance International).
Kind regards,
Jesse@KAF
